Step One -Introduction to Emergency Medical Care EMS
9 - 3 Units
Concurrent with Basic Life Support
AHLTH 14 - .5 Units
This course will introduce you to basic health care
principles and practices. At the conclusion of this class you will have
and understanding of advanced first aid concepts and practices at the
ãFirst Responderä level. Curricula also includes understanding of pre
and post hospital illness, injury prevention and intervention, and medical
terminology. This class provides a comprehensive overview of foundational
knowledge for all health care vocations. This class is also taught in an
on-line format.
Step Two -
Emergency Medical Technician EMS 10 -4 units
Prepares students for certification as an Emergency
Medical Technician. This course meets the State of California Department
of Health standards for Emergency Medical Training 1A. This course builds
on the ãFirst Responderä curriculum and includes airway control, medical
and traumatic emergencies, care of pediatric, geriatric and specialized
patients, emergency childbirth, multiple patient incidents and understanding
EMS responder well being. This course is also taught in an on-line format.

Didactic which includes textbook subject matter, medical
terminology, principles, objectives and case studies.

Web site activities, message boards and quiz practice (EMT)

Laboratory practice and return demonstration of skills
5.
Emergency Room clinical experience and evaluation (EMT)
6.
Ambulance ride-a-long experience and evaluation (EMT)

Practical multi patient incident drill

have traditional classroom sessions, but a web based ãhybridä is in the
works, allowing the student to do the classroom portion through the internet.
First classes projected for Spring, 2002.
Grading:
EMS 9
100 points - (13) 10 point quizzes will be given. The
worse 3 will be thrown out
100 points - Special assignment
100 points - lab specific preparation, attendance and
participation
100 points - final comprehensive written exam
100 points - final comprehensive skills exam
EMS 10
Method of Evaluation:

100 points - PCR and patient assessment assignment
100 points - lab specific preparation, attendance and

Completion of the Emergency Medical
Technician-Basic courses qualifies students to test for EMT-1 State Certification.
Completion of the Paramedic courses qualifies students to take the State/National
Registry examination for licensure as an EMT-P (Paramedic).
