Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I sign up for classes? A. New and returning students may submit an application for admission to the LMC Admissions Office. Once an application is submitted, a registration appointment time and date will be issued for course enrollment. Applications may be submitted by mail, in person, or online via the college website at www.losmedanos.edu. Continuing students need not reapply.** Registration appointment times will be posted on WebAdvisor for all continuing students. Dates and times are assigned, based on units accumulated by the end of the semester. Designated priority students will receive an appointment time scheduled for the first day of registration. **Note that continuing special admit students must submit a new application each semester. < back to the top > An instructor's signature is required on an add card to enroll in a class that has already closed. An add card must be completed, signed by the instructor, and returned to the Admissions window. Fees are due at the time of enrollment (adding). If a course is still open during the late registration period (first two weeks of the semester), students may enroll at the Admissions window without an add card. Q. When is the last day to drop a class? A. Since drop deadlines will vary (with or without a refund) depending upon the length of the course, students should inquire in the Admissions Office about these timelines or ask the course instructor. Students who are not present at the first class meeting may be dropped by the instructor as a "no show." However, it is the student's responsibility to notify the Admissions Office to drop any class in which he/she is not planning to attend. Failure to do so may result in an "F" grade. < back to the top > A "student refund" is money you receive if you pay fees and then drop out of LMC before the term is over. All LMC students receive 100% refund of fees in the first two weeks, less a $10 processing fee. If subsequent to paying enrollment fees the student is eligible for the Board of Governors Fee Waiver, the student will automatically be mailed a full refund check or a credit card credit will be issued according to the same refund processing cycle as enrollment fee refunds. Students who qualify for the BOG Fee Waivers are exempt from parking fees over $20.00 per semester. Q. Where do I buy a parking permit? A. Students may purchase a parking permit, valid for one semester. Permits may be purchased from the Admissions Office or from the Cashier's Office. Daily parking permits may be purchased from the red ticket vending machines located in Lot A, Lot 1A, Lot B, Lot C, and the perimeter road adjacent to the softball fields. Q. How do I get the results of my placement tests? A. You can get your placement test results online. (link: http://www.4cd.edu/webadvisor). Q. Where can I go to see a counselor? A. A college education should help students achieve self-direction in decision making and planning. To assist in progressing toward this goal, the College provides professional counselors who offer the following services: 1) Exploration of solutions to personal and educational problems. Contact the Counseling Center for officer hours and to schedule appointments. < back to the top > Q. Where can I obtain my grades? A. Final grades can be accessed at the end of instruction, immediately following instructor grade entry online. Students can learn about their final grades in three ways: 1) Call the phone registration system at (925) 370-9055. Q. How and where do I get transcripts? Students who need verification of previous education for use at LMC (counseling, VA, graduation, etc.) are responsible for requesting official transcripts to be mailed to the College. A. Transcripts from another institution, in the custody of Los Medanos College, cannot be released to the student or forwarded. The student desiring such records must request them from the originating institution. Transcript requests forms for forwarding LMC academic records are available at the Admissions Office. Signed transcript requests are also acceptable by mail or by fax. Students may receive their first two official transcripts within the Contra Costa Community College District free of charge. A fee of $5.00, payable in advance, will be charged for each additional copy. < back to the top > Q. Where do I get child care services? A. LMC provides a wide variety of child care programs through the Child Study Center. Programs include:
Part-time evening child care. Preschool children aged 3-5 years, and school age children aged 6-12 years may enroll in the evening program. Hours for the evening program are 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Monday through Thursday. Enrollment is open to the children of LMC students, LMC employees, and community members. Children must attend the Center on a regular basis – no drop-in care is available. Hours are scheduled in minimum 3-hour time blocks. Highest priority is given to full time LMC student-parents who are continuing their education from semester to semester. Parents who enroll their children in a child care program will be required to enroll in a Child Development course on parenting. College units will be awarded to those completing the seminar and lab work. Participatory duties and responsibilities are assigned by the Child Development staff. Specific course requirements vary. Contact the Child Development Department at ext. 3296 for applicable course numbers and sections. For more information on hourly fees for child care services, visit the Child Study Center or call extensions 3297 or 3198. Families may apply for reduced fees based on income. A one-time non-refundable semester fee for snacks and materials is charged to all parents. < back to the top > Q. Where can I get a Schedule of Classes? A. Schedule of classes is available at the LMC bookstore, or available online at http://www.losmedanos.edu/schedule/index.html. Q. I'm interested in career information. Where can I go to find out more? A. Career development and exploration services are available through LMC's Career Center, located on Level 3, Room 435 by counselor referral. Students receive personalized assistance that includes career interest testing, advice on resume writing, interviewing techniques, as well as career/job exploration on the Internet. Especially popular is the Center's EUREKA system, a computerized career information resource which can help you explore suitable career options.
